You're going to have to take my word that these picks were made before the games started...so here they are. Last week I went a fairly solid 6-5-2 against the spread.
HOUSTON (+1.5) over Tennessee
Tampa Bay (+2) over DETROIT
New England (-16.5) over MIAMI
NEW ORLEANS (-9) over Atlanta
NY GIANTS (-9) over San Francisco
Baltimore (-3) over BUFFALO
WASHINGTON (-8.5) over Arizona
Kansas City (+2.5) over OAKLAND
CINCINNATI (-6.5) over NY Jets
Chicago (+5.5) over PHILADELPHIA
SEATTLE (-8.5) over St. Louis
DALLAS (-9.5) over Minnesota
Pittsburgh (-3.5) over DENVER
Indianapolis (-3) over JACKSONVILLE
So, at halftime, the Pats lead the Washington Generals...uhh, I mean the Miami Dolphins, 42-7. Tom Brady has 5 touchdowns and 3 incompletions. Moss has over 100 yards and 2 TDs...already. The question is becoming not whether New England will go 19-0 but whether anyone in the league will manage to make them work for it. The Pats' smallest winning margin is 17 in their 34-17 cruising by Cleveland two weeks ago. Their lowest point total is 34 in that same game. Tom Brady's lowest TD output is 3. They just got finished crushing the best team the NFC has to offer, 48-27 over Dallas. What in the world is going on? Teams aren't supposed to be this good in the salary-cap era of the NFL.
Some locals in the Muncie area would probably crucify me for saying it, but not even the Colts can hope to hang with the Patriots. My early prediction at this point is that New England wins that game by at least 10, although the Colts have plenty of time in the interim to make me think otherwise.
Over in the NFL's junior division, the NFC, division leaders are currently being quarterbacked by (including tied teams) Vinny Testaverde, Jeff Garcia, Tim Rattay, Matt Hasselbeck, Tony Romo, and of course Brett Favre. Now there are at least 4 good QBs in that bunch, but Testaverde? Rattay? Hell, Garcia's almost 40 years old. How on earth are these guys supposed to compete with Tom Brady, Randy Moss, a will-be-healthy-by-then Laurence Maroney and company when they meet in the Super Bowl? The AFC title game, more so this season than ever, is the Super Bowl.
